A short vacation in New York might be just enough time to capture just a little of taste of what this busy non-stop city is all about. One of the first places tourists head for is the infamous Empire State Building and a trip to the top to see the views. However, it is the Rockefeller Centre that will provide superior views (weather providing) from the top at around 820 feet tall. If you want to see The Statue of Liberty but are short on time then have the ferry drop you at Ellis Island (the former immigration center) where great views are to be had.

An easier option is to take the Staten Island ferry which doesn’t cost anything and can still give a first class view of the Statue of Liberty, the island is also worth a look and the terminal is a favorite spot for street performers, some are of a professional standard. While you are on a a short vacation visit to New York New York a trip to the area where the Twin Towers used to stand has become something that every person who visits this great city must do. There is certainly a strange atmosphere to the whole, very large area that the Twin Towers stood on but not one where a photograph would be appropriate. An emotionally lighter attraction is to visit some of the famous stores like Tiffany’s or the Lower East side area where there are numerous bargain warehouses to look around.
Bloomingdales is another famous store (for the wealthy) to look around but it is Maceys, who will give 11 percent discount on production of a tourist card where most people will head for. An excellent tourist location is the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum which is likely to be closed until the end of 2008, once the refurbishment is complete it will be worth visiting when it re-opens. The highlight of this museum is the USS Intrepid, a World War Two aircraft carrier which houses the likes of the supersonic plane - Concorde not to mention a number of submarines. The New York City Police Museum is worth an hour if you’re down that way; it’s free to enter but a five dollar donation is recommended to help with its upkeep, because it’s about New York’s finest (and some not so fine), it has some really excellent NYPD souvenirs.
The Lower East Side also has a very large time capsule called The Lower East Side Tenement Museum which captures the lives of immigrants to New York back in 1864 Then it is worth seeing some of the older history of New York back when there were huge numbers of migrants entering the city and the Lower East Tenement was where most of them ended up which is now a museum and a time capsule. If you visit Central Park (and why wouldn’t you?) you can call into the Museum of New York City which has some excellent exhibitions about the past, present and future of the city. The building’s pretty grand and the shop sells quality souvenirs and while admission to this venue is free, a nine dollar donation is recommended. There is a huge amount to see and do in this city and if you are staying anything less than a short vacation in New York, you will hardly scratch the surface!
